Tarrifs don’t just fuel inflation and invite recessions.

Tariffs provide the conditions to create/expand black market commerce. They encourage smuggling goods across borders undeclared. They create revenue streams for law breakers and incentivize bad actors to set up networks of conspirators to handle the movement and storage of goods .

Those same networks can be leveraged to move drugs and people.

There's more to the fentanyl story regarding Canada. The US has been urging the Canadian government to get tougher for years - even under the Biden administration. Canadian police, justice and legislative authorities have not done what's needed. Too soft on crime. Tariffs are a stick to get them moving.

Although there are no winners in a trade war, Trump’s most fervent supporters insist he knows what he’s doing, playing a 3D chess game that keeps him five moves ahead of everyone else. They also insist that the exporting country pays the tariff tax—a belief that is both uninformed and misinformed which is typical of his supporters. It is maddening.
